In this month’s blog we wanted to give you an insight in to what it’s like to be part of our team, so I had a chat with Support Worker Gavin about his role in our Personalised Support Service.

After spending years working for a big supermarket retailer and then behind the scenes in a kitchen Gavin decided he wanted to try something new, and find a job that he could turn into a career. He didn’t have any qualifications in social care but had recently gained a Diploma in Counselling, which he wanted to do because he loves to help people.

Gavin said “I saw the advert on Facebook and looked up the LD:NorthEast website. I thought it looked great, everything I wanted really. I was so nervous when I got an interview but I didn’t think I’d ever get the job, I just thought they would never take me. I was so pleased when they told me I’d got it.”

So what does a typical day look like for a support worker? “There isn’t a typical day really, which is great. It’s always busy and I could be supporting someone to do anything from going to the library to going out for a walk, or even trainspotting. I also get the opportunity to support people to go on holiday; I’ve just come back from supporting someone to go on their dream trip to London, which was amazing. I don’t mind what I’m doing as long as they’re happy!”

I also asked Gavin what he enjoyed most about his job and he said “I love everything! Going out with the people I support is like going out with good friends. I don’t see disability because I believe everyone has ability. We’re just all different and I love working with everyone!”

We are currently recruiting for Support Workers to join this amazing team. If you have the energy, values and commitment to make a real difference to someone’s life then we’d love to hear from you! To apply please visit www.ldne.org.uk/jobs, closing date is Monday 22nd July.
